When dreamers become tech-heads, concept phones are created. Since Apple presented the iPhone way back when, concept phones enveloping futuristic capabilities draped in hopes and couched in possibilities have often centred around this base model.
Since the world has waited so long for the Apple iPhone 5, imaginations have scampered from rumour to rumour into evolving their own conceptual life into two concept iPhones that incorporate current iPhone capabilities, iPhone 5 rumours and both current and futuristic capability and design.
We’ll take a peek at both the iPhone-based concept phones that caught our attention.
The iPhone SJ
This concept phone hit the drawing boards shortly after Steve Jobs’ unfortunate death. This industry icon is commemorated in the iPhone SJ – with the SJ for the man himself.
Slim, sleek and full of function, the iPhone SJ seems to be basing the appearance on the iPhone 4 or 4S. It has an oversized Home button with arrow at the bottom, indicating a swipe menu option.
Flat and rectangular, the rounded corners and ultra-slim design make this concept phone a very attractive one. The almost non-existent exterior bevel around the display screen may rest just below the actual screen, making the SJ concept phone the edge-to-edge model idea that Apple has been hinting at for many moons; we know the iPhone 5 isn’t ‘there’ yet, so an SJ model might just take the honours.
iPhone 6 Already?
One iPhone 6 concept phone we scanned had some very interesting facets to it, and none the least of which was the curved design.
So what, you ask. Other models have had curves.
Well, yes, but how many of those others curved upwards from top to bottom with the centre of the screen resting at the bottom of the U?
Exactly.
With a 3D appearance and sound, the touchscreen blends its curved projection into a smooth screen display that appears to be flat but isn’t.
The actual screen is 4.3 inches with a Super AMOLED display, and the curve is supposed to make it thinner and lighter, as well as elongating the battery life.
Chris Youn, it’s designer, states that it fits very well into the hand, which is probably true. But we sceptics wonder how long people will tolerate it rocking back and forth if lain on a table.
The specs also include, according to Youn, a 3D TouchWiz UX, which certainly confirms this is a concept phone and not a future model of reality: Samsung owns TouchWiz, and never would they let Apple get its hands on it!
Interesting ideas, though.
